The Lifelong Learner Blog/Biggest Lesson Of The Week (BLOTW)/Is Your Mindset Stuck in a Zero-Sum Game? Scarcity vs. Abundance in Business

So, this past Saturday, I was sitting there, and I decided to pull up a podcast. I wasn’t looking for a life-altering epiphany; I just wanted something to listen to while I went about my day.

But then, the guest started talking about wealth attraction.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Wealth attraction" can sometimes sound a little... "woo-woo," right? (I’ve definitely rolled my eyes at my fair share of 'manifestation' gurus in the past). But as I listened, I realized they weren’t just talking about money. They were talking about the very fabric of how we see the world.

And it hit me like a ton of bricks.

The biggest lesson I walked away with wasn't about a specific investment strategy or a bank account hack. It was about one simple, terrifyingly common lie we’ve all been told since we were kids:

The lie of scarcity.

The "Zero-Sum" Trap

Think back to when you were a kid. Maybe you were playing a game or competing for a spot on a team. We are taught, almost from birth, that there is only so much to go around.

If I have a piece of the cake, that’s one less piece for you.
If you get the promotion, I don’t.
If that other guy in your niche lands a client, that’s one less client available for you.

We call this a "zero-sum game." It’s the belief that for every "plus" in the world, there has to be a corresponding "minus." It’s the idea that success is a fixed pie, and we’re all fighting over the crumbs.

But have you ever stopped to ask yourself... is that actually true?

A person standing at a fork in the road between scarcity and abundance

Is it possible: just stay with me here: that there is more than enough to go around?

Is it possible that my having success doesn't actually take a single thing away from yours?

I’ve started to believe that the "pie" isn't fixed at all. In fact, I think the pie is actually growing. But it’s hard to see that when you’re stuck in the day-to-day grind. The world screams "scarcity" at us every time we turn on the news or scroll through social media. We see people "winning" and we feel that tiny, ugly pang of "that should have been me."

That’s the entrepreneur mindset trap. And it’s a growth-killer.

How Scarcity Kills Your Business Growth Strategies

When you operate from a place of scarcity, your business starts to look a lot like a fortress. You stop looking for ways to help and start looking for ways to "protect."

I see this all the time in digital marketing for small business. A business owner will be so afraid of "giving away their secrets" that they barely share anything of value. Or they’re so worried about a competitor "stealing" their ideas that they spend more time looking over their shoulder than they do looking at their customers.

It’s like trying to drive a car while staring exclusively in the rearview mirror. (Spoiler alert: You’re going to crash.)

If you’re stuck in a scarcity mindset, you’ll find yourself:

  • Hoarding information: Afraid that if you teach people too much, they won’t need you.
  • Competing on price: Believing that the only way to win is to be the cheapest, because "money is tight for everyone."
  • Avoiding collaboration: Seeing everyone in your industry as a threat rather than a potential partner.

Does any of that sound familiar? Have you ever felt that way? I know I have. I've had those moments where I've seen someone else's launch go through the roof and felt like the air was being sucked out of my own room.

But that’s a hallucination. It’s not real.

The Abundance Pivot: Baking a Bigger Pie

A conceptual illustration of a fixed pie vs an expanding pie

What if, instead of fighting for a slice of the pie, we just focused on baking more pies?

When I shifted my thinking to abundance, everything changed. I realized that attracting money or success doesn't mean I'm taking it out of someone else's pocket. In fact, the more value I create, the more the entire "ecosystem" grows.

Think about it this way: When you use a tool like ClickFunnels (which is what I use to build my site and my funnels), you aren't just "selling" to people. You are creating a pathway to help them.

Funnel building is actually one of the most "abundant" acts you can do in business. You’re saying, "I have something that can genuinely help you solve a problem, and I’m going to make it as easy as possible for you to find it."

When you focus on serving more people, you naturally start to reach more people. You stop worrying about what the competition is doing because you’re too busy providing insane value to your own tribe.

This is one of the most effective business growth strategies there is: move from a "how can I get?" mindset to a "how can I give?" mindset.

Digital Marketing for Small Business: The Connection Act

I recently wrote about overcoming perfectionism (another form of scarcity, if you think about it: the fear that your "one shot" has to be perfect).

The truth is, the digital world is vast. There are billions of people online. The idea that there "isn't enough" audience for your specific service is, quite frankly, a bit ridiculous when you look at the numbers.

But scarcity makes us feel small. It makes us play small.

When you realize that your success is a "win-win" for everyone involved, you start to show up differently. You start to use tools: whether it's ClickFunnels for your sales process or AI tools like Marblism to speed up your workflow: not because you're trying to "beat" people, but because you want to be more effective at your mission.

(And honestly, having six AI "employees" helping you out is a pretty great example of abundance in action!)

My Challenge For You This Week

The world is going to keep shouting scarcity at you. It’s in the headlines, it’s in the way people talk about the "economy," and it’s in that voice in the back of your head that says, "Don't share that idea, someone will steal it."

But remember: You will find examples of whatever you look for.

If you look for scarcity, you’ll find plenty of reasons to be afraid. But if you look for abundance? You’ll find opportunities everywhere. You'll see potential partners where you used to see rivals. You'll see "failed" experiments as lessons that buy you future success.

So, here is my challenge for you this week:

Pay attention to the messages you hear and see.

When you scroll through your feed, is it promoting scarcity or abundance? When you talk to your friends or colleagues, are they complaining about the "fixed pie" or are they looking for ways to grow?

And most importantly: which message are you going to believe?

Success isn't a zero-sum game. There is plenty of room at the top. Actually, there's plenty of room everywhere if you're willing to stop fighting for crumbs and start creating your own feast.
